The Toyota 79 Series LandCruiser is one of the most trusted work and touring platforms in Australia. Whether it's pulling a loaded trailer across the Kimberley, working a remote station, or running corrugated tracks through the outback, the VDJ V8 is expected to perform in conditions that would end most vehicles. The one area where the factory setup consistently lets owners down is the intake system. Dust ingestion is the number one cause of premature engine wear in these environments, and the stock airbox was not engineered for the kind of sustained abuse Australian conditions demand.
That's why we built the Radius Fabrications 79 Series Panel Filter Airbox. It's a serious intake upgrade for a serious vehicle, and it was designed with one priority above everything else: keeping dust and water out of your VDJ engine for the long haul.
Built on Proven Principles
The 79 Series airbox came directly out of the success of our 200 Series panel filter airbox. We took the same engineering approach, the same fabrication standards, and the same performance targets, and adapted them for the 79 Series platform. Every unit is CNC designed, laser cut, and TIG welded before being precision machined on our 5-axis mill. That final machining step is what separates this airbox from generic alternatives. The sealing surface around the Toyota 200 Series panel filter is machined to a tolerance that produces a genuinely tight seal. When that lid is tightened down, dust ingestion is as close to zero as a fabricated airbox can realistically achieve.
This isn't a pod filter setup with a clear lid and a flashy finish. It's a sealed panel filter system built to do a specific job in demanding conditions, and it's been engineered from the ground up to do that job well.
The Filter Situation
The 79 Series airbox uses the Toyota 200 Series panel filter, which is not included in the kit. This is a deliberate decision. The 200 Series panel filter is one of the most widely available filters in Australia. Toyota dealers, independent mechanics, and auto parts stores in most towns stock it. If you're deep in remote country and you need a filter replacement, you're not waiting on a specialist supplier to post something out. You walk into the nearest parts supplier and you're sorted.
Using a filter that's genuinely available anywhere you travel is a practical advantage that matters when you're a long way from home.
What Comes in the Kit
The kit is comprehensive. It includes the airbox itself with a polycarbonate lid featuring the precision-machined sealing surface, airbox brackets, a full M6 hardware pack with bolts, washers and nuts, a relocation bracket for the power steering, a rubber and foam guard seal, 4" inlet and outlet rings that come pre-installed, and a drainage port with M8 bolt.
If you're purchasing the airbox as part of an airbox and snorkel combo, all the piping between the Radius snorkel and the airbox is also supplied. Piping is only included with the combo purchase, not the standalone airbox. If you have questions about pairing this with a Radius snorkel, get in touch with us directly.
The filter is not included. Source a Toyota 200 Series panel filter separately before installation.
Factory Position Fitment
The airbox is designed to fit in the factory intake position on the VDJ 79 Series. Mounting brackets are included, though it's worth noting that bracket alignment can vary slightly depending on vehicle tolerances between individual builds. This is normal across aftermarket fitment and the hardware pack included covers the standard mounting requirements.
One important note for 2024 model 79 Series owners: the updated guard design on the newer model means this airbox does not fit directly. If you're running a 2024 build, get in touch before ordering so we can advise on your options.
Water Crossing Performance
One area where the sealed panel filter design earns its place is water crossings. The airbox elevates the intake height and uses a sealed filter housing rather than an exposed pod filter, which makes it significantly more effective when you're pushing through river crossings or flooded roads. When the airbox is fitted correctly, it performs extremely well in water crossing conditions. This is one of the main reasons serious touring builds specify a sealed panel filter design over a pod filter alternative.
The drainage port included in the kit also allows any water that enters the system to exit without sitting in the housing, which is an often-overlooked detail in intake design.
Does It Require Tuning After Installation?
No. Tuning is not essential after installing this airbox. Many owners report improved throttle response and smoother airflow following installation, which is consistent with what a cleaner, higher-flowing intake delivers on a VDJ V8. The improvement comes from giving the engine a better path to breathe, not from recalibrating fuelling or boost targets.
Australian Fabrication, Built for Australian Conditions
Every airbox we produce is fabricated in-house at our Capalaba, Queensland workshop. CNC design, laser cutting, TIG welding, and 5-axis machining all happen under one roof before the unit is finished and dispatched. This is not a product sourced from overseas and relabelled. It's Australian made, built to perform in Australian conditions, and backed by the same workshop that produces our full range of custom fabricated intake systems.
If you're building a serious 79 Series touring or work rig and the factory intake isn't up to the task, the Radius Fabrications 79 Series Panel Filter Airbox is the intake upgrade worth specifying.
