Stainless Steel Snorkel for the Nissan GU Patrol Series 1-3: Built to Last, Built to Perform

Stainless Steel Snorkel for the Nissan GU Patrol Series 1-3: Built to Last, Built to Perform

The Nissan GU Patrol has earned its reputation as one of the toughest off-road platforms to come out of Japan, and owners who use them properly know that the factory intake system was never designed with serious four-wheel driving in mind. Creek crossings, bull dust, river beds, and corrugated dirt tracks all put the intake under pressure that the standard setup simply wasn't built to handle. A quality snorkel changes that entirely.

The Radius Fabrications 4" Passenger Side Stainless Steel Snorkel for the Nissan GU Patrol Series 1-3 is designed, fabricated, and TIG welded in-house at our Capalaba, Queensland workshop. It's built for GU owners who want a serious intake upgrade that handles real Australian conditions without compromising on finish or fitment.

Why a Snorkel Matters on a GU Patrol

The factory intake sits low in the engine bay, which makes it vulnerable to water, dust, and heat. In dry conditions, a low-mounted intake is pulling in hot, dusty air from inside the engine bay rather than cleaner, cooler air from higher up. In wet conditions, even a modest water crossing can push moisture toward the filter. Over time, both scenarios accelerate engine wear and shorten filter life.

Relocating the intake to roof height changes the equation completely. You're drawing in cooler, cleaner air from well above the engine bay, which improves engine efficiency and extends both filter and engine life. And in a water crossing, the intake is high enough above the waterline that water ingestion becomes a non-issue when the snorkel is properly sealed and fitted.

For a platform like the GU Patrol that sees serious off-road use, a snorkel is one of the most practical modifications you can make.

304-Grade Stainless Steel Construction

The Radius Fabrications GU snorkel is fabricated from 304-grade stainless steel throughout. This grade of stainless is chosen for a specific reason: it offers the right combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and workability for a component that lives on the exterior of a vehicle and takes constant exposure to sun, rain, mud, and salt.

Cheaper alternatives use mild steel with a coating, which works until the coating is breached. Once that happens, rust works its way under the surface and the damage compounds quickly. Stainless doesn't have that problem. The corrosion resistance is through the material itself, not a surface treatment that can be chipped or worn away on the track.

Every unit is CAD designed, CNC cut, and TIG welded by our team in Capalaba. The result is a snorkel that holds tight tolerances, fits cleanly to the GU body lines, and looks like it belongs there rather than like an afterthought bolted to the guard.

Finish Options

We offer three finish options on the GU snorkel: polished stainless, satin black, and textura black powder coat. Each one suits a different build direction.

Polished stainless is the choice for owners who want the raw material to do the visual work. It picks up the light and develops a natural patina over time that stainless enthusiasts tend to prefer. Satin black gives a lower-profile look that works well on dark-coloured builds or anywhere you want the snorkel to integrate rather than stand out. Textura black powder coat adds a textured surface that provides additional scratch and chip resistance, which is worth considering if the vehicle sees regular scrub work or tight track driving.

All three finishes are available directly through the product page.

Fitment Notes for GU Patrol Owners

This snorkel is designed for the Nissan GU Patrol Series 1-3 on the passenger side. It's built to complement the factory body lines of the GU and fit in the factory snorkel position without major modification to the vehicle.

One fitment detail worth knowing upfront: a small trim to the inner guard may be required to fit the silicone join. The fit is intentionally tight to ensure a proper seal, so this is expected rather than a sign of a fitment issue. It's a straightforward task for anyone competent with basic tools.

For TB48 petrol engine owners, the snorkel can work but additional piping is required to connect to the factory airbox. Before ordering, measure your inner guard diameter and the inlet size on your existing airbox to confirm compatibility. TB45 owners can also run this snorkel, though some modification to the supplied piping may be required depending on your setup.

GU and GQ Patrols were not factory intercooled, so we cannot guarantee compatibility with custom intercooler piping configurations. If you're running a custom intercooled setup, get in touch with us before ordering so we can talk through your specific fitment requirements.

Passenger Side Position

This model is the passenger side fitment for the GU Series 1-3. The passenger side position is the standard snorkel location on the GU Patrol and places the intake head above the roofline on the left-hand side of the vehicle. This positioning works well with both factory airbox configurations and aftermarket intake setups, including our own Radius airboxes designed for the GU platform.

If you're building a complete intake system from snorkel through to airbox, pairing the snorkel with a matching Radius airbox is worth considering to simplify the fitment and ensure the components are designed to work together from the outset.

Australian Made for Australian Conditions

Every snorkel we produce is built at our Capalaba workshop. CAD design, CNC cutting, and TIG welding all happen in-house, which means quality control sits with our team from start to finish. The GU snorkel isn't sourced from offshore and finished locally. It's designed and built here, specifically for the conditions Australian four-wheel drivers deal with.

Cape York, the Simpson Desert, the Kimberley, high country tracks, coastal dune runs. Australian off-road environments cover an extreme range of conditions, and the materials and fabrication methods we use are chosen with all of them in mind.

If your GU Patrol is due for a proper intake upgrade, the Radius Fabrications Stainless Steel Snorkel is built to handle whatever you put it through. Head to the product page to choose your finish and check current availability, or contact us if you have fitment questions specific to your build.
