Forward Facing Snorkel for the Toyota 80 Series LandCruiser: Short Entry, Drivers Side

Forward Facing Snorkel for the Toyota 80 Series LandCruiser: Short Entry, Drivers Side

The snorkel market for the Toyota 80 Series LandCruiser gives owners more options than most people realise when they first start speccing an intake upgrade. Beyond the basic decision to fit a snorkel at all, there's the question of inlet direction, entry style, finish, and airbox pairing. Each combination produces a different result in terms of how the snorkel sits on the vehicle, how it performs at speed, and how it handles water and dust in the field.

The Radius Fabrications Drivers Side 4 Inch Forward Facing Stainless Steel Snorkel for the Toyota 80 Series LandCruiser is the forward-facing short entry variant in our 80 Series snorkel range. It's fabricated from 304 grade stainless steel, TIG welded in-house at our Capalaba, Queensland workshop, and designed to follow the 80 Series body lines for a clean, OEM-style result on the drivers side of the vehicle.

What Forward Facing Means in Practice

The inlet direction on a snorkel is a genuine performance and fitment consideration, not just a styling choice. A forward-facing head positions the opening toward the front of the vehicle, directly into the airflow when the vehicle is moving. This orientation creates a mild positive pressure effect at the inlet at highway speed, where the motion of the vehicle pushes air toward the opening rather than relying purely on the engine's intake vacuum to draw air in.

For 80 Series owners who cover significant distance on open roads and highways alongside their off-road use, this can contribute to slightly improved airflow consistency at cruise speeds compared to a rear-facing configuration. The forward-facing head also has a more assertive visual presence on the vehicle, with the intake head pointing outward rather than tucking away toward the rear of the guard.

The trade-off to understand is that a forward-facing inlet collects more direct water spray in heavy rain and during water crossings than a rear-facing alternative, which deflects water away from the opening. For most Australian touring conditions where crossings are managed at low speed, this is not a significant operational concern, but it's worth factoring into the decision alongside how the vehicle is used day to day.

Short Entry Configuration

This snorkel uses a short entry design, which describes the path the snorkel takes from the guard to the airbox position in the engine bay. The short entry suits both the factory Toyota airbox and the Radius Fabrications airbox, and we supply the correct silicone joiners matched to whichever airbox configuration you're running. If you're using an aftermarket airbox in a 3, 3.5, or 4 inch configuration, specify your setup in the order notes and we'll confirm compatibility before production.

Standard shipping includes silicone joiners sized for the factory airbox unless you specify otherwise when ordering. Getting the airbox selection right before the order is placed avoids the need for replacement shipping, which is payable by the customer on incorrect selections.

Minor modifications may also be required for older generation 80 Series airboxes depending on your specific build year and configuration.

Engine Compatibility

The forward-facing 80 Series snorkel suits the full range of 80 Series engine configurations sold in Australia. On the diesel side it's compatible with both the 1HZ naturally aspirated and the 1HD-T turbocharged engines. On the petrol side it works with the 1FZ-FE. This broad compatibility means the snorkel suits most 80 Series builds without needing to verify engine-specific variants before ordering.

All Radius 80 Series snorkels are guard entry systems only. Bonnet entry configurations are not available in this range.

304 Grade Stainless Steel and Finish Options

The snorkel is fabricated from 304 grade stainless steel throughout, chosen for the combination of strength and inherent corrosion resistance it provides without relying on a surface coating. Every unit is CAD designed, CNC cut, and TIG welded in-house, which keeps dimensional accuracy consistent across every build and ensures the snorkel sits correctly against the 80 Series body lines.

Four finish options are available: polished stainless, powder coated black, seamless polished, and seamless powder coated black. The polished finish brings out the natural quality of the 304 grade material and suits builds where the snorkel is intended to be a visible feature. Powder coated black offers a lower-profile result that integrates more quietly into the overall vehicle presentation. Seamless variants remove the small but visible TIG weld join at each bend that appears on the standard finishes, which is a normal fabrication characteristic rather than a defect.

All four finish options are available through the product page.

What's in the Kit

The kit includes the drivers side forward-facing stainless steel snorkel, a cutting template to guide the guard modification, silicone joiners matched to your airbox selection, hose clamps, and mounting brackets. The snorkel mounts to the A-pillar using a custom bracket with nutserts and bolts, with installation instructions included in the kit.

The cutting template takes the guesswork out of the guard cut and should be the primary reference for positioning rather than measuring by eye. A clean guard cut produces a better-fitting silicone join, which is what produces a properly sealed intake system rather than one that looks right but leaks at the guard.

Aftermarket Turbo, Intercooler, and Dual Battery Fitment

Many 80 Series owners run additional modifications alongside their snorkel and airbox upgrade, and the most common compatibility questions relate to aftermarket turbos, intercoolers, and dual battery setups.

Aftermarket turbos and intercoolers are compatible with this snorkel system in most cases. Because every engine bay layout is slightly different depending on which components have been fitted, sending photos through to us before ordering is the most reliable way to confirm clearance for your specific setup.

Dual battery systems generally don't interfere with snorkel installation in most 80 Series configurations. Engine bay layout planning is the determining factor, and again, photos of your setup allow us to confirm this before you order rather than after.

Throttle controllers are compatible with the snorkel and airbox setup and can be used alongside the intake upgrade if that's part of your build plan.

Pairing With a Radius Airbox

The forward-facing short entry snorkel works with the factory Toyota airbox, a Radius Fabrications airbox, or aftermarket units in 3, 3.5, or 4 inch configurations. If you're building out a complete intake upgrade rather than replacing the snorkel alone, pairing this snorkel with a matching Radius airbox is worth considering. Both components are designed to work together, and specifying the Radius airbox at time of order means the silicone joiners supplied in the kit are already matched to that configuration.

For 1FZ-FE petrol 80 Series owners looking to pair this snorkel with a dedicated airbox, we also fabricate the Radius Fabrications 1FZ-FE Pod Filter Airbox specifically for that engine configuration.

Fabricated to Order in Capalaba

Every snorkel in our range is fabricated to order at our Capalaba, Queensland workshop. CNC cutting, TIG welding, and finishing all happen in-house under our own quality control, which is consistent across every unit we produce regardless of finish or configuration. Current lead times are listed on the website and updated as our production schedule changes.

We operate under a no change of mind policy given the custom made nature of our products. Confirming your airbox configuration, engine type, and finish before ordering keeps production moving without delays on either side.

If the forward-facing inlet is the right choice for your 80 Series build, the Radius Fabrications Drivers Side Forward Facing Stainless Steel Snorkel is built to sit cleanly on your vehicle and perform reliably in the conditions Australian 80 Series owners drive in. Head to the product page to select your finish and airbox configuration, or contact us if you have questions about your specific build before placing your order.
