A Custom Airbox Built for the TD42 GU Patrol

A Custom Airbox Built for the TD42 GU Patrol

The Nissan GU Patrol with a TD42 engine is one of the most capable touring platforms ever produced in Australia, but the stock intake system was never designed with performance or long-term reliability in mind. Whether you're pushing through corrugated outback tracks, river crossings, or running a heavily modified engine bay with a dual battery setup, the factory intake can become a weak point. That's exactly why we built the GU Patrol TD42 Small Pod Filter Airbox.

This is a purpose-built solution, designed and fabricated in-house at Capalaba, Queensland, for TD42-powered GU Patrols running dual battery systems or anyone who needs a compact, performance-oriented intake without sacrificing quality or fitment.

Why the Stock TD42 Intake Falls Short

The GU Patrol TD42 was built to be tough, but the factory airbox has real limitations. It restricts airflow, offers no easy way to inspect or service the filter, and takes up more space than most modified engine bays can afford. If you've already added a second battery or you're running aftermarket accessories up front, space becomes a serious issue quickly.

A purpose-built aftermarket airbox solves all of this. More airflow means the turbo gets a cleaner, cooler charge of air, which improves throttle response and efficiency under load. A compact design means you're not sacrificing clearance to get there.

What Makes This Airbox Different

The Radius Fabrications GU Small Pod Filter Airbox is fabricated from premium aluminium using full TIG welding throughout. There are no shortcuts in the construction. Every unit is CNC designed to maintain precise tolerances and exits our workshop with a powder coated black finish and a perspex inspection lid held down with allen key hex bolts.

That perspex lid is worth mentioning separately. It lets you visually check the condition of your filter without having to pull the whole lid off. On a dusty outback run, knowing your filter is clean before you hit a river crossing is exactly the kind of practical detail that makes a difference.

The airbox runs 4" inlet and outlet ports, which are sized to deliver strong airflow for the TD42 without over-engineering the system. It's also designed to sit comfortably within a dual battery engine bay configuration, which is one of the most common reasons TD42 owners go looking for a compact intake solution in the first place.

What's Included in the Kit

Every kit we ship includes the airbox itself, an Aeroflow high-flow pod filter, the perspex inspection lid with allen key hex bolts, and a printed installation instruction sheet. The Aeroflow filter is a quality filtration choice for a diesel engine in this application, delivering high airflow without compromising dust and particle protection.

It's worth noting that piping between the airbox and the turbo is not included. This is intentional. Every GU build is different, and we've found that leaving the connection point open allows owners to run their own custom setup or integrate the airbox cleanly into an existing snorkel system without cutting into factory piping that may not be reused.

Safari Snorkel Compatibility

One of the most common questions we get about this airbox is whether it suits the Safari snorkel, and the answer is yes in terms of alignment. The GU small pod filter airbox is fabricated to position at the factory snorkel location, so the alignment works with a Safari setup. You will need to sort out your own piping between the airbox and the snorkel, but the positioning is correct from the factory location. If you're planning a full snorkel and intake overhaul, this airbox fits naturally into that build.

Dual Battery Engine Bay Fitment

This model was designed specifically with dual battery setups in mind. The compact dimensions allow it to sit in an engine bay that would otherwise be too tight for a larger airbox. If you're running a secondary battery, inverter, or auxiliary fuse block up front, you'll know how quickly available space disappears. The GU small pod airbox gives you the intake performance you need without fighting for real estate in the engine bay.

Radius Fabrications recommends this airbox for TD42 diesel engine applications. While some owners have successfully fitted it to petrol variants including the TB45 and 4.8L engines, we do not guarantee fitment or performance on non-diesel configurations. If you're building a TD42, this is the unit we've engineered it for.

Australian Made and Fabricated to Order

Every airbox we produce is fabricated to order at our Capalaba workshop. This is not a mass-produced import. Each unit goes through our full fabrication process before it leaves the workshop, which is why the quality is consistent from one build to the next. Because of this, these airboxes are listed as a preorder and are dispatched once fabrication is finalised. Current lead times are listed on the product page.

This matters for anyone sourcing parts for a serious build. You're getting a unit built in Queensland by people who understand what Australian conditions demand from an intake system. Dust, heat, creek crossings, corrugated roads, long-distance highway runs. The airbox is designed for all of it.
